The zigzag patterns of the Silver Argiope—called stabilimenta— reflect UV light. This is helpful for both attracting prey and drawing attention to larger animals so that they don’t accidentally run into their webs and break them. . The stabilimenta also strengthen the web and this helps the spider be able to pump her web back and forth to help shake anything out of it. . The Red Winged Black Bird is considered one of the most populated living land birds on the whole North American Continent, as some 250 million breeding pairs can be seen in North and Central America in their peak seasons. . This abundance means they fall down on the food chain, and are commonly food for a multitude of raptors and small mammals, however they don’t go down without a fight, and will aggressively defend their nests with swoops and pecks. . The Atala Butterfly (my favorite butterfly) . Atala - the largest of the hairstreak butterflies in Florida - was once a heavily endangered species. In the 1950s, this creature was thought to be extinct. . Living only in Southeast Florida, Cuba, and the Bahamas, this colorful insect has its host plant as the Coontie - the only cyad in North America. . Thanks to conservation efforts and consistent reintroducing coontie into landscapes, the Atala population has recovered from endangered to threatened status as of recently. . I have been hosting them in my butterfly garden immediately upon hearing their endangered status, so I like to think I helped bring them back from the brink of extinction😃 . The Practicing Photographer Challenge Week 27 of 52! This week is “Photograph a clear demonstration of your first compositional awareness design” . My first time ever consciously using composition in photographs was with a diagonal separation between graphical elements. I found myself typically looking for some sort of line to separate the photo, and I always fell on the diagonal line in some part of the frame to create as many implied triangles as I could. . For my challenge example, I shot these super tiny mushrooms growing on a log and built the composition with them as the main centered subject while still implying a diagonal across the frame in the way the sunlight hit this log and the fungus growth pattern. I still love thinking this way. . Photo by: @daynjer_in_focus #tommydangershot #daynjerinfocus #tommydphotochallenge #thepracticingphotographer

Side view of one of the many Polka Dot Wasp Moths that hatched on the walls of our house after breeding them in the butterfly garden last summer. The Pie-Eyed Grebe are mainly aquatic swimmers that feed on small invertebrates and fish and will frequently dive about 20 feet down, holding their breath for 30 seconds. . They do not have webbed feet, but instead have lobes that come out of the sides of each toe that serve as a paddle- sort of like diving fins. . So I posted this baby Loggerhead Sea Turtle Already, but here’s his story: . I was told I could browse the beach right before sunrise and I would see hundreds of these babies hatching and coming out of the sand. I was thrilled since I’ve never seen one before. I was out there from 4👨0am until 7 with not a soul around...including no turtles. . I was just about to give up when I saw a tiny black dot far down the beach- it was this single baby turtle. He had been trapped under the sand and suffocating while his brothers and sisters all dug past him and left hours earlier. . By sheer will and determination, he had used most of his energy pushing hard and finally made it to the surface. Now he was struggling and having to pause a lot before trying to push to the water, so after photographing this little inspiration to survive I kept the birds off him until he made it safely to the ocean. Fight on—survive. It’s all we can do in this world. . Photo by: #daynjerinfocus #loggerhead #seaturtle #baby

Monarch Butterflies have become one of the most popular insects to humans due to their strong conservation efforts and large migratory path across North America and Australia. . In the fall, monarch butterflies will cover thousands of miles from the northern part of the continent to southern areas of Mexico and Florida for the winter. . Queen Butterflies and Viceroy butterflies have similar colorations and patterns to the Monarch and are commonly confused as such. . Monarchs have successfully been bred on the International Space Station! . I myself have bred these in average batches of 30-40 in my butterfly garden, so expect to see a lot more photographs of these lovely insects in the near future. Sometimes the thrust of the Anhinga (Snake Bird) is so quick and powerful that it will have to swim to shore and use a rock to pry the speared fish off its beak. (See the little fish stuck to its beak in this photo, you can almost see the frustration on the bird’s face) . These underwater hunters can easily be seen on any surface up against the warm waters of the south, dying their wings in the sun before flying to the next fishing spot. . They are capable of this underwater flight by the lack of oils most waterfowl possess in their feathers that keep them buoyant. . The Practicing Photographer Challenge Week 26 of 52! . This week is “Clone Composite Yourself!” . Calling this one “My Perfect Sunday” because it’s a Selfie Spin Jam! I was joking that a shot like this took a LOT of props and it would’ve been nice to have one of these clones actually do some work for me! Can’t believe it’s already been 6 months of this photo challenge! . The Adult Lubber grasshopper is significantly different looking than it’s all-Black nymph stage (see a previous post on my Instagram) and it’s colorations as well as markings will vary completely from grasshopper to grasshopper. . These colorations indicate toxic behavior, and unknowing predators that may try to eat this insect will wind up choking, gagging, vomiting, and even sometimes dying. . Their jaws are designed to consume leaves (not grass) and will eat any plant material in their path. . Photo by: #daynjerinfocus #grasshopper #lubber #locust

The Opossum is a Marsupial - meaning it has a pouch for carrying its young, and is about the size of a house cat. . When threatened, they will either hiss or do their famous “play dead” position. This play dead is more like an unconsciousness than a voluntary action and can be very believe able - the lips are drawn back with teen bared, saliva foams, the eyes close, and a foul smell is emitted. When in this state, you can move around the animal - including picking it up - and it will not budge! Whenever it regains consciousness movement will return first by a cute little ear twitch. . The Fifth growth nymph stage of the Southern Green Stink Bug is very colorful, looks like a shield, and smells bad, but what these Sink Bugs really STINK for is your garden! . They have a piercing, sucking mouthpiece called the rostrum they use to stab into a plant - preferably fresh fruit or new plant shoots - and then use their saliva to liquefy and eat the plant. In some cases, this can kill the plant, but it most certainly will destroy a small area surrounding what its feeding on. . Thankfully, there are natural parasitic wasps and flies like the Tachinid Fly that can help control these little insects, but you certainly want to keep these colors clear from your garden. .
