Injury Analysis ____ It is very important to analyse every factor that could have contributed to an injury so you can learn from the experience which will only make you a better lifter in the long run. ____ There were a few different factors that I feel heavily contributed to my hamstring strain on Saturday. 1. I had split open a callus on my right hand while deadlifting on the previous Saturday which hadn’t properly healed, and after my warm-ups it had re-opened slightly and my right hand had begun getting cut up as well. On top of this, my forearms were very tight - which I put down to poor programming on my own behalf. I did 4 sets of fat grip curls on Thursday and I was under-recovered. I had planned to significantly drop volume the following week, but looking back I should have dropped volume earlier. Additionally, the chalk currently in use at the gym is quite slippery and it’s noticeable. I had actually thought to myself while warming up for my top set whether or not I should just use straps for the session to save my hands for the last two heavier deadlift sessions of the prep, and I opted against it and thought to “man up”. 2. My right quad tendons were significantly under-recovered. It was initially quite painful while warming up, and I think I subconsciously changed my technique slightly to reduce the pain by not using my quads as much and favouring my posterior chain. Had I listened to my body I could have rested another day or two and perhaps avoided the injury. 3. Comparable to previous weeks, I was definitely initiating the pull with the bar closer to my shins which again reduced my quad drive and put more strain on my hamstrings. ____ It certainly would have been a hard decision to make to either throw straps on for my deadlifts being 4 weeks out or even just rest an extra day - as much more often than not I get away with things not being 100% and I can get the work done. It’s always easy to say I should have done this... when it’s after the fact. As long as I can realise this and make a better decision when I’m faced with important training decisions down the line then I will become a better powerlifter. 🎥 is my final warm up of 247.5kg
