“Painting to me is like a room of the imagination. It's up to me what I do with it. I choose its size and its materials - usually canvas and oil paint. At the beginning its relationships don't amount to much - it's a rectangle in a jumble of art history I relate to […]” ‘Roy Oxlade, Paintings from the 80s and 90s’ (the first solo exhibition of British Artist Oxlade's work since his death in 2014 aged 85) opened last night @alisonjacquesgallery . . . #royoxlade #painter #britishart #britishartist #artist #rosewylie #exhibition #painting #alisonjacquesgallery #80sart #90sart #artmonthly #modernpainters

We are delighted to announce the release of a new Rose Wylie Limited Edition titled Self Portrait with Shut Mouth, 2017 ~ £840 ~ 👄 . . This single colour hand drawn lithograph on Somerset satin white 300gsm is 63 x 89cm and is an Edition of 30 + 3APs, printed by the brilliant @thecurwenstudio . . Wylie makes paintings, drawings and prints of visually compelling images that she encounters on a day-to-day basis, finding inspiration in a variety of sources, from art history, cinema, comic books and the natural world to verbal anecdotes, news and celebrity stories. These might include a scene from Quentin Tarantino’s iconic Kill Bill films, a self-portrait of Wylie in her party clothes, or an olive oil label. Driven by a relentless curiosity and instilled with wit, her images propose new perspectives on the world and the plethora of images that make up our collective cultural memory. . . Wylie often combines text within her work to anchor facts and memories and here, she has included her initials ‘RW’ to indicate the identity of the sitter. The closely cropped composition is informed, like many of Wylie’s paintings, by cinematography. This work sits in contrast to the image of the artist’s open mouth about to eat a chocolate biscuit in her iconic painting Choco Leibniz (2006). . . Available to purchase now at shop.serpentinegalleries.org . . #rosewylie #serpentinegallery #thecurwenstudio #lithography #limitededition #printmaking #art #lips #redlips #selfportraitwithshutmouth #wortonhallstudios

Go to see Rose Wylie’s “Quack Quack” exhibition at the Serpentine. She is an artist interested in the point at which ‘primitive’ becomes elegant, and I LOVED her colours. Also, I am not usually one for football ⚽️ but I thought the joy in the expressions and movements of these two players was just so good. ☀️🌼🌞 #rosewylie #femaleartist #serpentinegallery

Rose Wylie, “Quack Quack” at Serpentine Sackler Gallery Rose Wylie, a painter from Kent, has unjustly needed to prove herself against criticism of “child-like” technique. Works such as “Park Dogs & Air Raid” (2017) demonstrate how Wylie blends WWII memory of the blitzes in Kensington Gardens with the present moment of relaxed, yet detached, domesticity in a post-Brexit London (complete with the Serpentine’s Zaha Hadid-designed restaurant). Drawing from Egyptian register lines, Old Master/History painting’s scale, and Victorian-era iconography reinterpreted for celebrity culture, Wylie displays her knowledge of Art History while giving her medium not only a vibrant life of its own but also a new way forward in our atemporal world. I found it remarkable that while I first encountered a large-scale 2006 work by her some weeks ago at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, D.C., her varied subjects and memory processes all unite behind her distinct brushwork. Beyond her technical brilliance, we must think about why she felt defeatist in the art world (graduating in 1979 at the advent of male-dominated Neo-Expressionism), and why her recent “breakthrough” insistently correlates her paintings with her age. It was truly an honor to be in the presence of her forward-thinking work. #rosewylie #painting #contemporarypainting #contemporaryart
