#Repost TUESDAY --------------------------------------- Joe Sterling wandered through a chain-linked fence and down the ramp of a loading dock in the SE Portland Industrial District 2 years ago. He'd been on a mad sprint for the last few years of his life and he had built a successful catering business... on top of a cookie business and a cafe. His relentless work ethic (and perhaps his cookie business) had propelled him to new heights. At the same time, Joe ballooned up to an all-time high of 320 lbs. His doctor uttered the words "pre-diabetic, which was enough to turn around and fight. It took a lot of courage to do something he had never done before, but soon enough that would become a habit because Joe had taken on a brand new quest. Self-Creation. Joe began with a simple attitude: Do whatever it takes. He started with light workouts 3x per week. Then 4. Then 5. He made sacrifices like (NO GLASSES OF MILK AT NIGHT). He made commitments (missed no workouts for a year)! He got results. First 10lbs off, then 20 lbs... up to almost 70 lbs lost during his fitness journey. Setbacks? Of course. Injuries? Yes. It's a cliche story, that the champion is the person who simply gets back on the horse after they fall. That's Joe's story. Even with physical pain, family tragedy, business frustrations and more... he has no quit in him. Conquer boring training and lack of accountability . . . A boxed-cereal addiction and constant caring for others left Amber in need of an overhaul. She wanted to completely shift her metabolism, her habits, and her body but she was unable to achieve those goals by simply going to her previous gym. She hated squats because they hurt her knees. She hated core work and could not perform a simple plank. Her fear of aggravating any of her prior injuries left her gently pedaling in the cardio studio while watching home improvement shows. Aside from martial art classes, Amber never really sought out coaching or personal training. My mom helped me form this "hobbit habit" early on... to give away presents to everyone on your birthday! When I was 10 years old, I started spending all my birthday money on me and my friends so we could have some great experience or adventure. TRANSFORMATION TUESDAY __________________________________ Joelle (aka Bootsie) first came into Training for Warriors Portland because she wanted to feel strong inside and out. She had been successful at pole dancing in the past and knew that she would have to find a physical practice to keep her body and mind on the upswing. She originally signed up for an 8-week warrior challenge to learn how to lift weights, to get some accountability and structure, and to feel strong again. 6 months, 7% body fat, and about 100 personal bests later, Joelle has done a lot more than figure out the pushup and the chin-up, at which she has become an EXPERT competitor. She also learned how to give a proper high five and how to cheer on her fellow warriors as they go attack their own warrior challenges. The month of May has been all about COMMITMENT. Commitment to excellence, to yourself and to dealing with whatever life throws at you. Our Warrior of the Month for May is Genevieve. She has truly committed to her own health and vitality to the tune of becoming a morning person and arriving at 6AM daily to train! Aside from this major lifestyle shift of getting to the gym early and getting to work early, she has also dropped some habits around sugar consumption and increased her protein intake.
