Happy Valentine's day. Since it is Valentine's day, I thought of giving you a chocolate fact. Chocolate was first consumed in Mesoamerica by the Mayans and the Aztecs along the other civilizations around the area. It was believed to be a gift from Quetzalcoatl, who was the god of wisdom. Through colonialism, the Spanish took it back to Spain and added sugar to the chocolate to counteract the natural bitterness. Ever since then the popularity of chocolate took off. #wsecre8 #wseid #wse #wallstreetenglish #education #chocolate #research #didyouknow #study #valentinesday #love #sweettooth #history #mesoamerica #history

Antoñia/ Antoñita Singla was a Spanish flamenco gypsy dancer who was born deaf and mute. She inspite of this has a passion for dancing and would seemingly transform in to a force of reckoning on stage. #movement #wallstreetenglish #wsecre8 #wseid #performancearts #flamenco #gypsy #spain #dancing #dance #accapella #force #singla #disabilities

#quoteoftheday So diverting from Writers Tuesdays, I am pulling a quote from my ballet crush, Mikhail Baryshnikov. He is bar none one of the greatest ballet dancers in history. Today we will focus on dance. #movement #dance #ballet #baryshnikov #wsecre8 #wseid #wse #community #education #learn #wallstreetenglish #knowthyself

Can't be on CRE8 in Indonesia and and not talk about a huge cultural signpost of Indonesia. Yup it is BATIK! is a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to whole cloth, or cloth made using this technique originated from Indonesia. Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting, or by printing the resist with a copper stamp called a cap. The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colours are desired. In October 2009, @unesco designated Batik as a masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. #wsecre8 #wseid #wse #wallstreetenglish #indonesia #batik #unesco #intangibleheritage #culture #identity #textiles #fabric #dye #masterpiece #art #patterns #

This piece "Rest Energy" (1980) lasted 4 minutes was one of the most difficult pieces Marina Abramovic had to do. "I was not in charge. In Rest Energy we actually held an arrow on the weight of our bodies, and the arrow is pointed right into my heart. We had two small microphones near our hearts, so we could hear our heartbeats. As our performance was progressing, heartbeats were becoming more and more intense, and though it lasted just four minutes and ten seconds, I’m telling you, for me it was forever. It was a performance about the complete and total trust." #wsecre8 #wseid #wse #wallstreetenglish #performancearts #marinaabramovic #intense #restenergy #performance #politics #dangerous #extremes #trust #bowandarrow #serbia #theatre #restraint #video #politicsofperformance #ulay #romance #love #intense

Marina Abramovic is considered to be the 'grandmother of performance arts" performing over 4 decades. Her work explores the relationship between performer and audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind. Active for over four decades, Abramović has been described as the "grandmother of performance art." She pioneered a new notion of identity by bringing in the participation of observers, focusing on "confronting pain, blood, and physical limits of the body. This piece "Rest Energy" lasted 4 minutes was one of the most difficult pieces she had to do. "I was not in charge. Hey guys! I saw this and it looked super interesting. If you are bored, why not check out this exhibition at the World Trade Center in Jakarta. The exhibition presents the work of two artists, Adam de Boer and Jumaldi Alfi. Born a decade and ocean apart, the experiences of each are distinctively different yet strikingly similar. Born and raised in Southern California, De Boer identifies as Dutch-Indonesian-American. Alfi, born in West Sumatra, speaks proudly of his time spent in Java and his special relationship to his adopted home, Yogyakarta. An examination of their paintings reveals the layered nature of identity, also raising the question of how one becomes or is made part of a contemporary (art) community or historical (art) tradition. You have silk, but did you know that you have sea silk, or byssus which which comes from a clam. It is said to be sacred, used as far back by the pharaohs. A 62 year old woman by the name of Chiara Vigo from Italy is one of the few; if not only woman who is able to weave this fabric and make it shine like gold. It takes 100 dives to collect about 300g of raw sea silk without harming the clam. After spiritual and chemical procedures, she is able to weave the fabric. She does not sell it because it is seen to be a gift from God. To be a master of sea silk you must learn 149 designs by memory. Today is Writers' Tuesdays. And I will focus on a really cool writer, Nancy Wood (1936-2013). She is a Native American writer and photographer who produced 28 books about the American Southwest. This poem is from the book 'Many Winters', 1974. #wsecre8 #wseid #wse #wallstreetenglish #writerstuesdays #writer #nancycwood #nancywood #nativeamerican #firstnation #literature #quote #quoteoftheday #poetry #true #beyourself #americanwriters #americansouthwest #manywinters

Page 13 of the 'Urban Sketcher' by Marc Taro Holmes (2014), states that drawing the silhouette accurately can be done by doing slight measurements of the object in proportion to aspects of themselves. Use simple shapes to break down the objects and then fill in the details. Swipe so as to see how to break down an object. #wsecre8 #wseid #learnuary #wallstreetenglish #wse #garuda #breakdown #urbansketcher #marctaroholmes #museum #learnsomethingnew #practice #measurement #sketch
