#WednesdayWisdom If you have a newborn baby up to one-week old, Play gently by moving your baby, gently stroking your baby and holding your baby with skin to skin touch. Hold your baby close, talk or sing to your baby, especially while breastfeeding. These simple actions serve as an important function in building & strengthening neural connections in a baby’s developing brain. Without them, brain development can be hindered. #EarlyMomentsMatter

Emerging research shows that small particles of pollution can break down critical barriers in a child’s brain. Globally, around 300 million children live in areas where the air is toxic, exceeding international limits by at least six times. #EarlyMomentsMatter

In early childhood, the brain consumes almost 50 to 75 % of energy that a baby’s body absorbs from food. Lack of nutrition in early childhood can lead to stunting — a condition that affects almost one quarter of children under five worldwide. #EarlyMomentsMatter

Nearly half of children under 5 years of age in low & middle-income countries are at risk of not achieving their cognitive potential because they are poorly nourished, not stimulated properly, and/or subject to violence & pollution. #EarlyMomentsMatter

The most important thing a child has is the brain. In the earliest years of life, children’s brains can form at least 1,000 neural connections every second, connections that are the building blocks of a child’s future. The brain develops rapidly before birth and during the first two years of life. During this period of growth, children need adequate nutrition (starting with breastmilk); a safe, clean environment; at least one caregiver to provide loving attention; and the opportunity to play and learn. However, nearly half of children under 5 years of age in low and middle-income countries are at risk of not achieving their cognitive potential because they are poorly nourished, not stimulated properly, and/or subject to violence and pollution. We must recognize one of the greatest challenges to every society in the world: healthy brain development from the earliest possible moment of every child’s life. That is why investement in early childhood is needed as it is the smart thing to do. Full cognitive development brightens the future happiness of every child. On average, ECD programmes cost $0.50 per capita per year when added to existing health and nutrition service-delivery. ECD programmes can improve individual adult earnings by almost 25 per cent and yield more than a 13 per cent return in reduced poverty and income gaps. #EarlyMomentsMatter

Happy New Year 2018!!! Approximately 1,810 babies will be born in Nepal on New Year’s Day. Nepalese babies will account for 0.5 per cent of the estimated 385,793 babies to be born globally on New Year’s Day. While many babies will survive, some will not make it past their first day. In 2016, an estimated 2,600 children died within the first 24 hours globally. For almost 2 million newborns, their first week was also their last and 2.6 million children died before the end of their first month. More than 80 per cent of these newborn deaths are due to preventable and treatable causes such as premature birth, complications during delivery, and infections like sepsis and pneumonia. This New Year, our resolution is to help give every child more than an hour, more than a day, more than a month - more than survival. We call on governments and partners to join the fight to save millions of children’s lives by providing proven, low-cost solutions. For every child, Survival.

Nepal has one of the highest rates of child marriage in Asia – for both girls and boys. Although the legal age of unions for both sexes is 20,more than a third of young women aged 20-24 report that they were married by the age of 18, and just over one in ten by 15. Nepali boys are among the most likely in the world to be child grooms. More than one in ten is married before they reach 18. Child marriage is a human rights violation, restricting children’s choices, changing their course in life, and putting them at significant risk of abuse and violence. #EndChildMarriage #WetheFuture
